Default shifter **** removal???

Am trying to replace the console cover on my 85 automatic. How do you get the darn shifter **** off?. I can pop the shifter button but there is a thin piece of metal about 1 1/2 inches long that apparently holds the **** on that I cant get off. Anyone know how to remove this other than a tractor pull? Thanks in advance.

it is held in by a ring/clip. you need the ringclip pliers to get it out. It is at the base of the shifter. there is a hole on each end of the clip that accepts the ends of the pliers. I know my terminology is wrong here but hopefully you get the gist. I have done it a lot, its easy with the right pliers

It's not too difficult to do with a narrow bladed, flat screwdriver. Had to do it that way once before I bought the snap ring pliers.

Did it with an ice pick. Just make sure you cover the top with your hand so the clip doesn't go flying somewhere.

don't screw around with ice-picks, screwdrivers, or whatever - do yourself a favor - go out and buy the correct tool for the job. this is what i have - perfect size for the C4 gear shift **** snap ring. after the initial investment, you'll always have as part of your tool collection...
