Turbo,
figure your car should run 100 degrees over outside air while driving on freeway.
Slightly higher on rubberized asphalt. higher yet on piestewa peak at the curve going north.
So your car should be at 205-210 degrees on a 110 degree day on freeway. 225 in stop and go.

With an all aluminum 2 row, and a 170 t-stat, 90 degrees outside, my 86 runs at 175 degrees on fwy.
At 109 degrees, it runs at 189 on fwy. In stop and go, it runs at 195.

According to TPIS's instructions - which is where I first learned of this procedure, it's actually a TWO PART mod.

Not only are the two holes drilled (different sizes based on the ambient temperature expectation) but the by-pass hole behind the passenger side leg of the water pump should be plugged.

That makes the job a lot more involved; pulling the W/P and re-installing it.

non-drilled t-stat, using a good temp gauge with a good sensor, sensor located correctly, and paying close attention: coolant temp will rise above t-stat rating on a cold start...then drop below t-stat rating...after a number of 'excursions' the gauge will stabilize...hi probability that the pistons/ heads/ etc are seeing a roller coaster of temperature/clearance changes, also.

drill the t-stat and engine warm-up to 'normal op temp' will be slightly longer but without overshoot/undershoot of coolant temp...better for the engine but vehicle occupants may complain of reduced cabin heater enthusiasm in low ambient conditions.

fwiw, our testing showed that with four 3/16'' holes in the t-stat, ambient 85*F, light engine load: coolant temp never reached the t-stat rating (too much not always a good)

If you are just trying to bleed air, do it this way.
With a cool engine, take radiator cap off. Then start Vette, turn heater on full. Rev engine to about 1500 ish, then when temp gets to where the thermostat opens, you will see flow and then add distilled water as necessary to fill her up. Thren, once full, put radiator cap back on.
Reduce rpms. Radiator system is now fully packed.

Does anyone know if the failsafe stat has a hole in it.

Some stats already have a hole with a jiggle valve in it. The Duralast stats at Autozone have this jiggle valve. I believe they are made by Motorade. Though, I went with Stant and drilled a hole.

I have and am using one of those and, no hole. Most auto stores sell them; Advance, O'Reilly's and yes, AutoZone.

I recommend them because I've had a NON Fail-Safe version fail on my while driving down the road IN THE CLOSED position. Almost left me stranded.

I was able to wait out the time for cool down and finally made it home with the temp at 260F!!!

I never got one of those because I've heard alot of reports of them failing in the open position far too often. Like in a few months. Sure would suck to have to keep replacing a stuck open thermostat over and over again.

Yea, I had one do that too, but, hey, consider the alterrnative. Getting stuck when one fails in the closed position, as happened to me.

Huh? What makes you think a fail-safe open stat is any more likely to fail than the opposite type?

BTW,,,Anyone ever consider that 3/8" burp holes might let your stat perform like a 160-degree stat? Better yet,,,if you run one that stuck open, it's like a 0-degree stat! What's the problem?!?!?

Sounds exactly like my '96 (only I'm running a Hypertech 160* stat and a DeWitt's new model single-row radiator). Sounds like mine is about as close to your mentioned specs as can get

I was wondering about benchmarking, as I wasn't sure whether I was getting the best cooling efficiency out of mine, but looks like I am getting similar specs. Thanks for the confirmation.

Sound right for me also... I'll run 205-209 on freeway until stop and go driving then from 211-225. Last year changed to a 160 tstat (with hole), drained, flushed and replace coolant... then noticed plastic bag and paper stuck on the radiator (was running 235+)

Just a side note, do you Phoenix guys go to the Pavilion in Scottsdale on Saturdays?
