Default Drilling Thermosat

In a simple yes or no answer.........

Will a 1/8 hole drilled in the flange of the thermostat help with bleeding air out of the cooling system?

Thanks, Mike

Mike, the 160 stat already has a hole but, I don't think a 1/8" hole would do any damage on a regular stat.

The hole works great for bleeding out the air.

Now you know I can't give a simple yes or no answer.....TPIS even has this as one of there (tips) in there new catalog..They say to drill 2 -1/16" holes instead of one 1/8" hole, but either is fine.. ....WW

If you drill one hole. I've read you are supposed to point it at the radiator.

I drilled a hole in my robertshaw as the cone in the middle would hold air when I dunked it.

Those type have a notch cast in the inside edge to let air by. Look by the rim and you'll see it.

How did you notice air in the cone, you'd have to turn it upside down to look. Plus there are just small openings in the bottom to look through.

That notch is for the rim, air will still get to the center cone.

I dunked mine then turned it over and lots of air bubbles came out from the cone.

So, I figured that would be a nice spot for air to collect. Though, it is possible air may not collect there when in operation. But I drilled a hole since I saw it collecting air. I think Stewart drills holes in the cone of the Robertshaw stats with their pumps.

Except you don't need a hole that big if you're just drilling for a bleed hole. Be carefull when drilling as you don't want to go any further in than the casing.

why else would you drill for other than to bleed, why did you drill it so big?

Congratulations. That is a huge lifetime achievement. God Bless Him. My son also went to West Point, Jason Verkay,Class of 95 I think it was. Was in Special Forces, Rangers, fought in Macedonia and Bosnia. Came out a Captain and works for Capital One now. He bought me the house I live in. Great people go there and even greater people come out.
That also reflects on the fine up bringing your son had. He will need as much support as you can give him now, and I will have him in my prayers. You will see that they take care of their own now, and anything I can help you with do not hesitate to contact me, Welcome to the Family. Brian Verkay Sr.
