I believe the knock sensor is between 6 and 8.
the ect sender is in the water manifold, below the pump.
i kinda like the thought of the fan switch at the same location as the ect anyways, making sure they both get similar readings.
besides, the water manifold location is a much easier location to wrench.

yes - on your 87 with a front and rear fan, you will have your front fan turn on at 208 and the rear at 228 if you just plug and play it.

Knock sensor(s) is in the block above pan rail

Locations vary by year and engine type
The Coolant Temperature Sensor ( CTS ) the computer uses for turning on main fan is in the intake under the TB on L98's and in the water pump on LT1's
The gauge sender unit could be in LH or RH head depending on L98 year model.Likewise the fan switch ( if fitted )
Positions were reversed in '86

you can jumper over to both relays to make them both come on, but I'd do only the one first and see if it does the trick.
both fans running means more amperage requirement which means more power tapped from the motor and lower fuel economy.

i know i'm splitting hairs but technically it's in the manifold that houses the pump, not the pump itself.
split #2 - in the GM factory manual, they refer to it as a engine coolant temperature (ect) sensor.

If you're running a stock thermostat steer clear of those that turn the fan off at a lower temp than 195 degrees...
you'll be needlessly running your electric fan and that costs mpg/hp, as well as cuts the cooling fan motor life down a bit.

Fan question.
I have an 87,
So what is wrong with having the main coolant fan run all the time the engine is running, key on- fan runs>>> the thermostat at 195 controls the engine temp, right?<>>> seems simple, ( besides cutting mpg or life of the fan motor?
I am having trouble with mine also, even replaced the ECM and no help.
that is the way the cars use to run, fan runs when engine runs
Any Ideas or input?
george.
