Default Fuel pressure test.

on an 1989, when i turn ignition on without starting car i get about 40-43 psi then it goes down to zero, should it hold at 40 without starting car. im trying to determine if fuel pump could be bad.

It should hold pressure for a long time. Don't go out and buy a pump until you know the area of pressure loss. Your going to have to pinch the supply and return fuel lines, to help isolate the area. You can get at the 2 lines, if you remove the fuel door and rubber boot.

This is from my 86 FSM, the only difference I can think of is the fuel pump relay wiring is different on an 89.

Refer to this 89 schematic for your fuel pump relay wiring.

thanks for the info, prior to this problem i ran all new fuel line (supply line) with a rempte fuel filter in the engine compartment. could it be electrical? the problem im having is the car wont stay running, it starts then stalls out after about 30 secs to 1 min, like its flooding it self, then after doing start & restart for about 3-5 times it gets to the point where it wont start at all. i noticed that the passanger side header is very hot to the touch but the drivers side i can hold with my hand. I know that all cylinders are getting good spark. I just orderd all new fuel injectors(needed to replace old stock ones any way) had a new PROM chip programmed, new ECM & new ignition module, and installed a BBK fuel pressure regulator. Should have all parts this week to put back togeather, but in the mean time trying to get info. seems like the drivers side fuel injectors are not working.

As Agent 86 wrote, the pressure should hold for quite a while. There's no specific time but the pressure should NOT immediately drop to zero. You've got a leak, probably internal unless you're seeing fuel puddles under the car.

Check your injector fuses to see if they're good.
