Just had the '87 tuned up last friday and went on an 80 mile journey today. Service Engine Soon light comes on and stays on for about 5 miles then goes out and stays out for a number of miles and comes back on. This happened about 4-5 times on this journey. This was not happening before the tune-up. Plugs, wires, pcv, distrib. rotor & cap were replaced. Air flow filter was cleaned. Other than that only physical inspection was done. The EGR & MAP sensor were not touched. Going on long trip friday. What to look for? Will take it back to service garage but wanted some opinions first. Thanks
Check that the wire on the EGR temp sensor ( on crossover pipe from pass exh manifold ) hasn't been broken during the tune up.
Only feedback to ECM when it turns EGR on is seeing the temp sensor close indicating exh gas is flowing to EGR valve
If ECM commands EGR and doesn't see the switch operate ; Code 32
Of course this is also dependent on the EGR valve and solenoid working as well; connector to solenoid or vac line to EGR valve may have been disturbed during tuneup also
Also, check the condition of the EGR valve diaphragm. If it's cracked or otherwise not holding vacuum, it'll cause the Code 32 your car is exhibiting.
You can check the valve's operation using a MityVac to contract the device. Remove the valve from the rear of the intake to inspect. It's held in place by two bolts.

Took the car back to the mechanic this morning.....claims no pinched wires, vac lines off or other MISTAKES during tune-up but now has vac tested the egr valve and says that its not holding vac (what you said above onedef92) (seems pretty coincidental to me of other work that went on since the problem hadn't previously existed). Says replacing the egr valve is a 3-hour job???? Does that seem right to you all. Obviously my time with this shop is done. There just isn't any well known corvette mechanics in this area.
Took me about 45 minutes when I replaced the EGR valve and solenoid switch on my LT1. Hardest part was locating a short enough wrench in my tool tray to access the EGR valve bolts.

Thats what I thought. To me this mechanic/garage doesn't know corvettes. He was recommended to me after the local corvette club's sponsored dealer/mechanics was folded by GM. Is the L98 and LT1 degree of difficulty about the same re EGR valve?
