I have spent an hour or so doing different searches & see lots of opinion on rear gears being a great "bang for the buck" mod for auto cars.
My 92' LT-1 auto is stock & I think 3.73 gears will wake it up BUT I have not been able to find anything stating real world 1/4 mile time improvements so I can get an idea of just how much "bang for the buck". Car is strictly weekend cruiser so I don't care about MPG, etc.
Can anyone point me to some real world improvement times for gear swap only? Not that it is a big concern but what does this do to the top end performance?
Hello, I went from the stock rear I think 2.59 or something like that. I put in a Stock Dana 44 with 3.54's Did a custom exhaust, power programmer to change gears and shift points. Went from 14.00 to a best of 13.4. She runs 13.5s to 13.7s everyday. Gas Mileage went from 24 average to 22 average. Of course it's even lower now cause it's much more fun to jump on!!!

Reason: add
I just installed a 3.75 rear end after originally going from a 2.59 to a 3.07. The difference was big time. I picked up 3 tenths in the 1/8 mile and 3 mph. Gas mileage dropped a bit to about 19 on the highway, but the response when you step on the loud pedal is fantastic.
My best "bang for the buck" mod was installing a 9-1/2" 2800 stall TC purchased from Pete K. With the stock 3.07 gears I picked up 1/2 second in the 1/4 mile.

Same EXACT converter and gears, difference was great!
