Can someone point me to where I may be able to purchase this tool? I would like to have this tool around the shop to at the least be able to report codes instead of guess work. I'm new to the Vette world and I also have the seatbelt light on. I have jumped the electrical connection behind the driver’s seat thinking this would make it go out if something was wrong with the actual seat belt connector. No go. I have read some threads on the sensor under the battery tray and intend to check this area. I should also mention the air bag light does not come on. It was this way when I bought it and I did not know is should come on and then go out. My bad. So my theory is someone removed the bulb. I’m guessing on this because at this point I’m not sure if it should show on the information center or the dash, but do know it does not show in either place. Any help is appreciated.
I believe most auto parts stores can sell you an OBD1 scanner, but they may have to order it because these days it's old technology. What year is your car?
OBDI is not a tool, it refers to the first generation of On Board Diagnostics used to help troubleshoot fault codes and performance issues. Each manufacturer had their own proprietary protocol for accessing the information, confusion caused by that is what prompted the government to mandate the second generation system known as OBDII beginning in 1996. You can however retrieve codes using nothing except a paper clip by following the instructions in this link.
Also be aware if you choose to buy a scan tool that will read OBDI data, all but the most expensive professional grade tools will only read ECM codes and data. Other computers such as the SIR (supplemental inflatable restraint or air bag ) CCM (body computer) ABS (antilock brakes are not accessible with typical inexpensive consumer grade tools.
