Last night my wife said the car was acting weird ( 1990 coupe with auto trans ). I drove it home yesterday and it drove great, she drove it after I got home. Today I drove the car to the store and it does not want to shift up in gears. Every gear will not shift up unless I nail the gas and then it shifts very hard. I have to rev the car to like 5000rpms to make it shift up. It is down shifting when I come to a stop. When you leave the stop it will not shift up, you will be driving along at 4000rpm waiting for it to shift but nothing will happen unless I just floor the gas, then of course it shifts real hard and the tires go up in smoke.
look on the sheathing on the tv cable, andon the dark gray plastic, you will see a wear mark. Move the cable to the wear mark, and it should shift better.
(push in white area on TV cable adjuster, and move the sheathing)
Well I took the car into the shop for the transmission and we found metal in the pan. The gov was hanging up because of trash in the valve body. I told them to pull the trans ( 700r4 ) and rebuild it. Is there any tricks or special parts I should have them put in teh trans while they have it off the car?
Buy good quality clutches and a B&M or TRANSGO shift kit
i have a B&M shift kit (which many doesnt like) and i have a nice chirp from 1st to 2nd
and better shifts, you won't feel any SOTP but its a nice improvement.
While you are getting the transmission rebuilt, add a 2200 - 2400 stall converter and you'll love the power. It puts the shift points right in the "sweet spot" of your engine's power. It will not effect your cruising or MPG. When you floor it HANG ON. I couldn't believe the difference. It is probably the most effective mod you can do for the money. It actually produces results you can feel.

What is the cost of the stall? Does it effect the daily driving of the car if the wife drives it? What about other parts does it strain the drive line parts?
No ill effects at all. It will drive just the same as far as cruising. It will still shift into 4th gear at 42MPH min. and converter lock up is the same. It will not effect the downshift either. When you floor it the shift points are raised a little higher than stock in the motor's power range. It really wakes up the torque curve. My tach never goes below 3K rpm and it pulls harder than stock until the next gear. What happens is your engine is spinning faster when it changes gears and will not bog down until it reaches the "sweet spot" of power/torque. Contact/ search the web PACT transmission in Bosier City,LA. Their transmissions will outlast the car. As far as stressing other parts of the car - don't worry your stock engine will not twist the body.
My car is not a full time daily driver but I do drive it every day for some weeks at a stretch.
Guys my engine is not a stock engine I don't know if that matters. The engine was replaced with a ZZ4 crate engine, holley throttle body & fuel reg, 24# injectors, PCM chip, Linger long tube headers, 3.07 gear. The trans shop just called and said they had to remove the driver side header to get the trans out and it was a beeetch. Once they take the trans apart they will tell me if it already had a shift kit and if the converter is still good. I asked about the stall and he said it would work great but it would hurt my MPG, not I care any way I did not buy a Vett for MPG.
You might rethink using an old converter with a new transmission. It will have metal flakes and trash in it and it will contaminate you new piece.
A stronger engine is all the more reason to go with a higher than stock stall converter. I'm sure you will get it worked out and get what you want. It only hurts the MPg because you foot will be floored more than before while you have perma grin from ear-to-ear.

I would question the competence any mechanic that considers using and old converter out of a trashed transmission containing metal particles.

Reason: new info
9,5" with 2600 stall is perfect! You'll feel difference and MPG won't hurt. It will feel normal (stock) when you drive it everyday, but when you floor it - your ears will stick to the rear window.
Phoenix transmission was recommended to my here when I was rebuilding my tranny. And I just recommend you to call them and ask for Drew he is the owner. They'll get you good converter with good deal. I think they have some listing on ebay too.
Also I heard "Pete K" torque converters are very very good.
And while you rebulding your tranny get 3-4 Z-pack clutches. Ebay has them too. And these guys are very good and reliable. They have everything for 4L60E.
You guys do know that the stock corvette converter is a "high stall" converter (the reason I quoted it is high is relative...) - it's got a rated stall speed of 2050-2250 RPM as I recall - (they can look in the Daaco catalog to verify) so anything around that range would be better off going with a stock converter - Last 700R4 I had on the street was with a 26-2800 lockup unit and I'd have to say it was about perfect for a daily driver that you wanted a little more punch out of...
