Not sure what you mean by THERMO COATED PLUG WIRES.
Do you mean the aftermarket Spark Plug High Temperature Boots? They slip on over spark plug boots. Made by manufactures such as MOROSO, DCE, and others.
They will help protect the spark plug boots from the high temps radiated from long tube style exaughst header heat. They are a good investment.
This is just one of many but this link should get you pointed in the right direction. There are a few options and you can find them in different colors. These things are not cheap. I found a set on eBay for about 1/2 price and paid almost $30 for 8 of em.
Been using stock wires(no boots) for 3 years with Hedman headers, so my answer would be "no".
Having a good working set of stock looms, would be advantageous.
I am in the process of installing long tube headers on my 87 and I have noticed how close the auto transmission oil lines (going to to the radiator) are to the passenger side header pipe. I just pushed the pipes away from the pipe but they are still too close for my liking

Never had a problem using the stock wire retainers; they keep the wires nice and tight to the plugs.
When I went to aftermarket heads with no provision for the stock retainers I had to use the boots because length of plug wire from wire holder on centerbolt rocker cover allowed wire to hit header pipe when wire softened from heat

What is a stock loom? Is this associated with the plug wires or with the general wiring? My plug wires are all just held together by a series of plastic wire ties.
