Default Intermittent Poor Idle - LT4

The last couple of weeks my 96 has been dipping a bit (to around 500 rpm) before rebounding when I put it in neutral.

The last day or two it is now intermittently (seems to happen when warmed up to operating temp) has exhibited a generally crappy idle. When this happens the exhaust fumes become noticeable in the cabin.

My initial thought is a dirty or failing idle air control valve (IACV). And the car has not thrown a check engine light. Thoughts?

There might be a code stored w/o the light. Could it be O2 sensors?

If you suspect a dirty IAC it costs nothing to clean it. It might also be loose causing a vacuum leak. Or, possibly the EGR valve?

Just out of curiosity what brand 02s did you get? Bosch do not seem like the OBDII of the '96 very much at least not for very long. Delphi or ACDelco are best and I've even had problems with them on my '96. Right now I'm using Denso's and so far so good. Also a exhaust leak before the 02s will make your car run rich causing the smell in the cabin. A vacuum will also.

All of the sensors were replaced with ACDelco parts. The car finally threw a code and it turned out to be a defective O2 sensor. It was replaced under warranty at no charge...

That is the good news, the bad news is a rock broke my windshield on the way to the shop.

That would be the wrong day to buy a lottery ticket. Glad to hear you got your idle issue fixed, though.

Just FYI, there is no EGR on factory lt4's. The cam phasing meant it was not needed.

Thanks for the info. It seems that I'm always the last one to find out about stuff.
