Prolly different opinions for that question.
In my opinion, never trust the stuff that comes in the mail. Check everything.
I agree here. Alot of "balanced" stuff doesnt actually check out at the machine shop. I've heard this from many people before. Its a rough balance job.
If you keep rpms down you may not need to worry, but if you want to make any power you'll need some rpms and dont want to be spinning an out of balance assembly up. you'll beat the bearings in few miles.
As I've written repeatedly, one of the big advantages in visitng many different Forums on a regular basis is being exposed to a LOT of feed-back on the same issues. With that in mind, in my visits to other Forums, I've repeatedly read responses from guys complaining about the "as delivered" balancing of the supposedly already balanced assemblies.
So, I'm totally in agreement with Pete K and others that even those that are "supposedly" balanced, should be re-balanced by a competent machinist.
In that regard, I highly recommend finding a shop that does, as its primary business, high performance/racing engines, NOT dealership warranty work. They're easy to find, just ask the fastest racers at the track or pick the brain of your local parts guy at, say, AutoZone, O'Reillyh's, Advance, NAPA. Many of them are racer's or, now that they're older, use to be racers and will KNOW where to take your parts (and where not to).
Put me down as being an strong advocate of re-balancing. That's what I'd do and as a perfect example is what I just did this past Wednesday. I practice what I preach, LOL.
I just left Coil Racing Engines he showed me a rod/piston a customer paid for a balanced assembly . Mail Order . He paid for 6.8 rods and got 6.7 . Wrong rods on the right pistons .
