when close to stock how much does tuning really help?
Hi I have a 93 corvette. pretty close to stock now. I've been trying to do the things that don't require tuning so far. It has a AO engeering fresh air system. E.M. long tube headers and a Borla catback system,1:6 roller rockers and will have comp 26918 valve springs, a electric water pump and a underdrive pulley system when I'm done. I've allways been of the opinion that tuning isn't going to help a stock car that much or that the genaric chip tunes you buy are most likely money down the drain. Part of the reason is I'm just not that good with computers and don't own a laptop to double check what a tune does to my car. I understand you have to give them imput on how they have changed things so you get a real improvement. How much higher h.p. can you expect with a car like mine? I've found one site that says tuning can help gas milage also, I wouldn't mind an extra 20-30 HP and better gas mileage too. Can I expect that? thanks Tim
If you can find an old laptop for cheap (must run windows XP) the software and hardware will cost $300. It's a great learning experience figuring it all out, if you've got some spare time. That's probably on the lesser side of what it would cost to get a tune done anyway.
You have a speed density car and the intake and exhaust changes you made will definately effect the tune. My guess is you are lean at WOT and will pick up some power (10 to 30 HP) and a safety margin with a tune. The speed density car cannot make AFR changes (at WOT) for engine modifications and that is why speed density cars need to be tuned after engine modifications are performed. (Even minor modifications, headers and intake changes)
