Default OK, What's the trick!

Seriously!

I just pulled the plenum of my L98 to get the EGR out as it looks like it is bad. Everything was going real well even got the first 3/8" bolt off the front passenger side of the EGR base.

How do you get the rear driver side 3/8" bolt!!! The EGR body stick over the bolt so no extension/universal/ratchet can fit into the socket! Using a standard Craftsmen 3/8" box end wrench I run into the fuel injection rails or the rear regulator so can turn it! The manifold body has a ridge right next to that bolt that makes access from the driver side impossible!

I'm thinking the only way is to cut down a 3/8 wrench into a stubby?

If I'm totally not getting it please someone set me straight!

I was able to break those bolts loose with a small wrench.

I say you could try using a crows foot as that probably would let you get an extension to it so you can use your ratchet.

I had to bend a 3/8" wrench at approx 90 angle...

I wound up taking my cutting wheel to the EGR valve and hacking it up until I could get a straight shot with a socket and extension. When I installed a new one, I was able to get a small wrench in there just enough on the corners of the bolt to snug it down (but no way when trying to remove a bolt that had been in there for years).

Has anyone put a light coat of antiseize on the EGR gasket? I had to scrape that thing off layer by layer with a razor blade while holding my shop vac hose next to it to keep trash from falling into the intake.

I figured the antiseize may make it easier to remove the gasket in the future.

Have you ever seen a distributor tool? Reason for asking is because this shape is what you need for the EGR bolt. I cut the 9/16 head off, then cut a 3/8 boxed end wrench down and welded it to the tool.
If that bolt head rounds off, it is a real PITA to remove.

Hope this helps

I have put Loctite antiseize on the EGR valve gasket and also on the EGR pipe gaskets.
Half a year later i had to open again and no troubs with sticky gaskets.
I can recomand using antiseize!

No need pick up a set of these: http://www.amazon.com/SAE-Crowsfoot-.../dp/B001Z0WF2K

These also work well for getting at the distributor hold down bolt but you will have to grind the outer edge area slightly where a ratchet extension slips in.

It's a pain but it can be done.

Done it twice myself with a small 3/8 wrench turned up. But I would go get a real tool like has been suggested.

I got mine on with a small 3/8" wrench. But would much rather use a crows foot if that would work so I could also torque it to spec. Haynes calls for 14 ft/lbs torque on the EGR bolts.

wow, I remember that bolt (Z28). Patience and think outside the box. I did it with a regular wrench.

Yes, it can be done.

These instances are just how my tools collection grows! Then at least I'll have more options next time. I've had similar issues in the past, so having another set of tools to save me 15-30 minutes of fighting is well worth it.
