I would have sworn they use a 350 small block as well
What's your point? An 85-91 smog pump delete won't work on an 84. Which is what the OP was asking. Yes, the cubic inches are the same. But they are still different engines which is why they have different model numbers.

My point is quite simple. I'm a bit surprised you didn't catch on.
Your first post you were unsure whether the delete kit would work or not because of "it's a different engine".
Basically they are the same engine with the exception of the routing of the belt and intakes. Both use a 350 SB which are the same.
When a user reads "its a different engine" they may take that as its completely different all together which is not accurate.

Your also refering to L83 and L98 as model numbers for the engine, which is incorrect.
In 85 an part of 86 the L98's had iron heads. Then changed to aluminum heads. Until 87 had flat tappet cams then changed to roller. So the term "L98" being a model number for an engine used between 85-91 really wouldn't be accurate and could misinform the poster or other readers

Really I'm not trying to be a stickler, just trying to point out that its really not a "different engine"

I still stand by what I said that 84 and 85 used a different engine regardless with them both having the same cubic inches.

Would you also say the 84 has the same engine as a 96 since they both use a 350 SBC?

Haha. 85-91 had an L98 engine which is very accurate information. And yes an 84 used an L83 engine which is documented all over the place along with what year Corvettes had the L98 engine.

I doubt many if any will say GM didn't put an L98 in the 85-91 Corvettes, not including the ZR-1 or Callaway.

Referring to L83 and L98 as model numbers for the engine is very accurate since GM is the one that came up with the model numbers.

I think it is innaccurate telling someone an 84 and 85 had the same engine. As one may rely on that information to try and install an airfilter for an 84 onto an 85 thinking they are the same engine.

I have an '84 and Josh does have a point. When in context the accessories hung on the front of the engine of an '84 is a different engine.

There is no way to commingle a discussion about water pump replacement or AIR pump replacement between an 84 and an 85+.....they are just too different to do that.

I replaced the pump and it was a pretty easy swap, however it is still making noise, chirping at an idle and getting louder at higher rpms... it says it needs a 500 mile break in period, but I feel like it shouldnt be making that much noise, also my check engine light has been on and off since the swap, altough I'm not entirely sure thats related. Any advice? Should I just stick it out and hope the noise goes away, and the light goes off?

1st off you need the factory shop manual (FSM) It will tell you how the system operates. The ECM controls the relays to divert AIR flow and these might not be operating properly causing some of your noise.
Hopefully the replacement pump will make sure the thing doesn't lock up and toast your belt.
