You will need to remove the engine mounting nuts from under the cross frame and jack the front of the engine up so you can drop the pan low enough to clear the front bearing cap if I remember right
Only one problem though, I think the stock seal is one piece and you need to remove the flywheel or flexplate and oil pan to change it as I recall.
See the rear main seal photo courtesy of Pete K in this recent post:
Can the oil pan be dropped with the motor still in the car I have a leaking rear main oil seal it a 2 piece seal.
If so do I need to lift the motor up to do so or not.
if it is 2 piece (motor may not be l98 orginal),, remove distributor cap, motor mount 7/16 bolts, lift motor with picker. remove oil pan, remove rear main cap, use pick to remove upper seal,, (REmmeber which way in come out),,after cleaning, reinstall new neoprene seal with a dap of black gasket maker on the ends (dont for get to lube it, dont want dry start). install new seal in cap replace, retorque.. drink beer..
now if it is one piece, the tranny and motor must be split, the one piece seal must be removed from the rear of the engine,, buy more beer
Why would you suggest all this, when he could simply drop the pan, and replace it?
With #6 @ piston at TDC, counterweight is up, and pan will fall out.
NOT nescessary to lift motor on a c4 to replace a 2 pc seal.
Thanks everyone It not the stock motor.
It's a New motor but as normal for me what can go wrong did go wrong ya rear main seal.
I have oil dripping out of the inspection cover of the Auto trans.
The reason I think it the main seal the drip comming out inspection cover, If was a valve cover or a oil sende it seemas like it would be driping around the sides of the motor instead.
I've got a rear seal that needs to get changed too. Not looking forward to that one as I've never done it before. I'll poke around here and see if I can find some step by step photos of the proceedure first.
I had oil dripping out of the inspection cover, too. Took it off, shined a flashlight in there and couldn't see that the seal was really leaking.
I bought a little bottle of dye and a UV flashlight at Pep Boys. I sprayed the hell out of the back of the block with BraKleen to clean it. Add the dye to the oil (about a quarter of the bottle) and run it a few minutes. Shine the UV light at suspected spots. It'll glow yellow where there's a leak.
Replaced the intake gaskets and sealant---Look Ma!! No more oil dripping out of the inspection cover!!
