There's nothin worse than lookin back goin...oh man I wish I had .....when I had it apart..When I did my heads I didnt do the cam and timing chain and now I dont want to yank it apart again...Trust me.... NIKE...Just Do It.
This is me everyday!
My intake is off, exhaust, and tranny is out too.
I'm like this close to pulling the long block (w/ 1K miles on it) and stroking + AFR heads. this close!
Might as well get it over with. Ya got the 2nd car. And not just cuz everyone is razzing you. Living w/ regret SUX! "oh, I shoulda did it when it was easy".....and so on.
To do it all at once is the smart way of doing it. Its not like you are re-inventing the wheel, you are going with a reliable proven combo. It's not a problem at all to do the install.
Especailly since you have another car to drive for a while.
For the time it took me to read this thread , you could have had the cam in already.
Think about it. You have the parts, you have another car, the weather is perfect if a bit chilly. Do you really want to be doing this in July or August ?
At first I would say no because your motor has a ton of miles on it, it smokes, it has a bolt in the oil pan that is probably from your pickup tube, and its noisy. On the other hand, the smoke is most likely due to bad valve stem seals and the noise is probably your old lifters. You might as well throw the parts on and enjoy the car instead of waiting and waiting for when you build another block, because that probably won't happen for a while. Worstc ase scenario, you grenande, the bottom end, you won't hurt any of the bolt on parts.
Scorp; I agree with the pack, do it all now, get it over with. Unless you want to document the pieces/parts and how much difference they make. Go for the total package approach. If you are not going to use that cam any time soon, can I break it in for ya? don't you have some roller rockers too, that I couold also break in gently for you. I promise not to put too many miles on them. I only drive 100 miles a day roundtrip to work, in DC traffic. Get Jiggy wid it....

Re: It is soooooo tempting....
I just took another look at this thread and noticed that your short block has 166,000 miles on it, a good number of which were probably hard.
If you want to put together a high performance package, you want to drive it hard, and you want it to last then this sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Bolting on a fresh, tight top-end will probably just lead to big blow-by at the rings. I cannot see how this thing will last very long. I would pull the motor and do it right the first time.

The last 67.5 have been. I got the car the first week of April, 2000. All of the previous owners were older and enjoyed cruising instead of racing.
If the bottom goes, it goes. Just an excuse for a 383 or more. Right now the car burns about 1.5 quarts every 3500 miles. This includes drag racing and autocross in the mix of every day commuting.
