Although my high miler is running perfect... when the parts arrive it's heads, cam, Opti, rear gears, all the shortblock stuff and tranny... Do it in one shot.
I always seem to come down with a case of the "While I'm at It"s. My last trans swap turned into a "might as well yank the motor and change all the gaskets" project.
My new ECM & wiring harness project has turned into a, "might as well throw on a new accel super ram base, fuel rails, runners (polished), port match and polish the plenum, new throttle body, yank the trans again and new diff & 28 spline moser axles" project.
After that I wanna do subframe connectors, but as long as I'm going to be yanking the carpet, I might as well buy new carpet, which means I should do the door panels, new dash, and recondition the plastic. It never stops.
I dunno how much you've followed my story. :) The worst part is that I have all of those parts sitting in my room waiting to be installed. The $$ is already invested, it is the time that I didn't have before I got the camaro.

Since you have a second car to drive now, I would say do it. You are already at a good time to do it, and you might regret it if you don't do it after you get it back on the road. Then you will spend the weekend after that putting the parts in, to make yourself feel better about not doing it when you had a good oportunity.
Just do it. You have been planning it for over a year, now. I don't think it will be that hard to tune or trouble if there are any issues (your basically going to have to deal with the heads/cam/intake) The clutch/tranny are seperate system and headers either leak, don't leak, or are melt something.
 You are asking "This" group to talk you out of upgrading your car...I don't think so...I think you are trying to convince yourself, and you are already 75% sure you want to...You just need a little nudge. Check your bankbook, that will tell you which way to turn... :yesnod:
Scorp,
I would do it now and not wait til later. Why wait and take it apart again, it is just a wast of time. You have the parts and Baystate Club members to help you. Why kick yourself the next time at the track wondering what if I had the super ram etc.
Do it and dial it in early in the season.
