Jasper sounds like a good option, but wouldn't it affect the value of the car instead of using a GM engine? I guess I need to do more homework. Thanks for the help guys!
Any non-original engine will hurt the value somewhat. Even if you had a dealer swap out for an LT1 crate motor. But you'd be putting in a known quantity if you got a Jasper engine, and it would be way cheaper than a stock replacement from GM would have cost you.
I'd guess your car is fairly high miles, since you were looking to freshen the engine anyways? In which case any notion of value is already out the window.

The same would apply to any engine that a machine shop would rebuild. Unless you gave them specific instructions to use the original block and heads, a machine shop could very well swap any pieces of your engine for another. It's common for shoips to purchase aftermarket components anyway rather than taking time to do every machining step. Crank kits, pistons, even a different set of heads can go on a motor that is built by a machine shop.
And don't limit yourself to a stock replacement motor. Even a ZZ4 crate motor will be comparably priced, they carry a GM warranty, and will provide more HP and torque over stock yet remain very streetable.
If you look thru the Summit Racing website for Chevy engines (JEG's too) you will find all sorts of options for short blocks and complete motors that will work.
