Something is backfeeding power to your ignition system. Have your alternator checked.

Is it dieseling or does it just keep running. If it just keeps running I would ck your ignition switch. Not the lock cylinder the switch itself. If its dieseling ck your timing.

I would assume the engine is not dieseling. This is because the older cars that had carburetors, the carburetors don’t shut off which will supply the engine with fuel which is required for dieseling. Fuel injectors do shut off cutting off fuel supply hence lessening the ability to diesel

So my first inclination is the check the ignition switch as already indicated. It might be a bad switch or the linkage that controls the switch might cause the problem also.

Start with the obvious first. Check the ignition switch (they can wear out).

Go a little deeper, it's behind the ignition keyhole in the steering column.

What year is your car?

If "sys" is flashing, look for codes in the CCM (not ECM). These are read thru the trip computer buttons, use forum "search" to get instructions.

The ignition switch is not on the top of the steering column by the lock cylinder or steering wheel. It is down below by the base of the steering column. It is a slide switch which is actuated by a rod.

I can't exactly tell you how to take it out since I have dot done it. But I can tell you there is also an adjustment or alignment for it. If it should become loose it may not be turning off when the rod moves to the off position.

On the base of the column there is the ignition switch and the high beam switch. I believe the lower switch is the ignition switch, the one you are looking for.

FSM for my 94, page 3F5B-17 Your car is a 91, hope it helps.

I guess it's possible the ignition switch has gone bad itself, but you will just have to get down there and investigate and see what you find.

Good luck.

As pcolt94 said, it's under the dash. It will likely be very close to the big bolts that mount the column under the dash, probably attached to the column and has a 1/8" steel rod from it to the wheel. Turning the key back and forth will let you see the rod move.

It's a GM thing and they do wear and get sloppy, more often than not when you can't get power when you turn the key backward to ACC it is this same thing that does it, sloppy and incomplete travel.

@pay the mechanic: I did changed the cap and rotor, but not the coil, still I dont see link between the coil and the engine shut off ...

thanks

before you spend some cash, unplug the little plug on the alternator, then start the car and then shut it off. if it quits immediately, you found it.
Be careful though, the plug is almost 25 years old, and can easily break the tang that clips it in there.
