I am looking to replace the rear end in my vette. I just have a few questions I hope someone can help me out. It is my understanding that the 1985 with a manual trani had a heavy duty unit with 3:07-1 ratio as opposed to the auto with a 2:73. What pumpkin did these units have? Did they ever change to the heavy unit as standard on all cars or just with the manuals and if so when? I am hoping to find a heavy duty unit with the 3:07 gearing. What year car should I be looking for and does it need to be manual? any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Rob
You're looking for a Dana 44 found in 85 and up Vettes with manual transmissions (unless the car has been altered). It's a heavier duty rear with a larger ring gear and can take more abuse.

And you require the complete head/ batwing unit.
The D44 head does not fit a D36 batwing.
Also need a D44 DS and C Beam because D44 head is longer.
Other than that it is a bolt in swap using all your existing parts
