If you lived closer Mike to me by Peoria, IL, i would let you use my full set of 700R4/4L60E kent Moore trans tools.

Prices are kind of high on some tool finds you have shown.

I am thinking Dana at Pro built transmissions in California had the correct rebuild tools needed also.

I will search tonight later when I have time for you too.

Check with your local GM Dealership for the Reverse Input drum for your 1990 700R4 too Mike.

I think the GM part is best. Have been told that by other pro trans builders too.

Try this : www.transstar.com

The have the service tools you need also.

have hub shipping centers all over the USA.

Including Chicago area here in Illinois.

This applies to other steps where it is a one time use. When I did mine a local shop did three steps for me at a cost of $15.00 per step. It has been so long I forgot which steps. I did the same kit you are doing, got something like 25 k on it now with absolutely no problems. BTW, the B&M guide is excellent.

I dont know if that www.transtar.com link helped you or not Mike.

There is one upgrade that I think should be done to all 700R4, 4L60E, and 4L65E transmissions during an overhaul or raceing bulidup....

Buy and install a heavy duty "BEAST SUN GEAR DRIVE SHELL"

The original GM sun gear shell in our our C4's are known to be on the weak side. They sometimes break along the splined area where it mates up to the Rear output mainshaft.
They will strip off all the splines or even crack.

When that happens, you lose 2nd, 4th, and reverse gears.

Does happen even behind a stock V8 or even a V6 engine.

The aftermarket "Beast Sun Gear Shell" is a big improvement in strength over the stock GM part. Supposed to take upwards of 800+ horsepower I have been told.

I think Pete K. recommends the Heavy Duty Beast Sun Gear Drive Shell too.

I bought a Beast Sun Gear Shell and installed it into my 87 Vert trans during rebuild.

It is a much heavier and beefier(thicker along the splined area) part than the original GM part.

For $50.00 its a good investment to put into your 700R4 trans.

If your B&M transkit has the "Beast Sungear shell in it, You are one step ahead already then.

If not, I would buy a Beast Sun Shell.

with Brian , when my tranny was rebuilt i was there watching every step
and i did get THE BEAST, its pretty good insurance and i have read nothing but good comments about it , the sad thing is that i have zero memory of installing it neither comparing it to the original part
So maybe i bought it but didn't get it ...i can't remember
but soon i will know if it breaks !

I used the Transgo No Yo Yo Hardened Pump Rings for high rev applications too.

And Trans Go High Rev spring kit.

And a PATC 10-Vane Billet Steel Pump Rotor.

And bought another stock 10 Vane pump kit for the outer slide and New vanes in the kit.

Maybe overboard, but for my 410 Ci smallblock I have built, I didnt want to have any future problems when ready to do my engine swap.

Sammy, You have to have the "BEAST SUN GEAR SHELL IN YOUR 700R4 !

I think with the stock GM shell, by now You would have broken it. LOL

You like to race and get on it hard over and over like me !

Good luck with your tranny rebuild.

You are a lucky man, my wife loves me completely but would draw the line at a bike or tranny rebuild in the kitchen.

Update on this thread.

I have been working on my el camino since last saterday. I work full time so my time on my cars is limited. Anyway, I installed my new seats and new Hurst competition Plus shifter. I am driving this while my vette is down so I wanted to wrap this up first. (el camino). I did not get the line locks on yet, but that will come later.

So tomorrow after work I am going to resume working on the vette.

Pics or it didnt happen on the camino?

Here is pics

What year is your Big Block El Camino Mike ? Is it a 1968 or 1969?

Looks like it is alot of fun to drive around. LOL

Is it quiet ? Or do you have 1 or 2 chamber Flow Master mufflers on the Camino ?

Big Blocks with loud exaughst are alot of fun to drive around in and set off car alarms and store window alarms. LOL

I used to do that in my Big Block Pontiac 1970 1/2 Trans Am.

Just idle by and set the vibration sensors - alarms off and smile.

Even more fun to show that to a buddie riding shotgun with you.

Its a 1969. This car gets way more attention that my vette does when I drive it..

I love the low rpm torque a big block produces.

Todays progress.
Its going slow. After I get off work I usually only work until dark because it gets cold then. I have a hard time staying motivated when Im cold.

Today I removed the TC cover, TC bolts, removed the drive shaft and C beam. This is my first time having the driveshaft and c beam out of my car.

Tomorrow I hope to pull it. I think I want to take the top 2 bell housing bolts out first. Anyone know what size bell housing bolts are?`And how do you put those ****'s back in when you are re-assembling?

Thanks for all replies.

Mike

The bellhousing bolts should be 9/16" inch socket size Mike.

Thats what they are on my 87 Vert.

Just put the bolts back up with your socket and extension with a swivel U-joint between.

Not that bad that way to remove and reinstall all 6 bellhousing to block bolts.

Might want to pick up this step by step DVD. Blows the shop manual out of the water.

Impact is your friend. Long extension and 9/16 wobble socket for sure on the bell bolts. I think there some ground wires on the driver side ?? The one wih the dipstick strap is the hard one.
