Default Brake switch problems (1986) Coupe

My Brake lights suddenly started working intermittently. I bought a new Brake switch today and installed it. Problem is the switch does not tread into the collar. Someone previous to my ownership perhaps did something to it. It just slips through the hole. I tried adding a collar bolt to hold it in place. But if I tighten until it does not move it impedes the brake pedal. IF I loosen it give play and I am back to intermittent brake lights.

You have a mechanical problem that will have to be solved. Consider installing a new bracket, ok a used bracket, whose threads haven't been ruined. Another cure would be to machine a collar with internal threads matching the switch and external threads to match the bracket. You may have to tap out the bracket to the next larger standard tap size. Or machine a collar with a flange and threaded outside for a nut to hold the collar on your bracket to clear the brake pedal arm.

I just replaced the brake switch on my 87 and found there are no threads on the bracket the switch goes through. The switch has a retaining collar which expands as you push the switch through the hole on the bracket to its adjustment point. This is per the factory service manual. This is of course assuming your 86 is the same design specification as mine. It appears to me the person that played with it last lost the expanding ring for the threads for the switch adjustmet. Hope this is helpful for you.

Here is a bump up to the top again. As I said in the General section, check the grounds. There are far many more far smarter then I.
