Does my 89 corvette have
An external voltage regulator or is it built into the alternator yesterday i had my guage in the dash telling me 11.8 volts and low batt voltage light was on...... checked at the battery and found 14 volts... thought ok maybe bad sensor or something then today drove it home about 30 miles and batt light was still on and noticed extreme loss of power then noticed lights were dimming and knew car was dying hurryed home and just as i pulled in driveway car died what do you guys think im thinkin bad regulator or bad alternator all together please help anything would really be appreciated

Hi Jcartman
You have built in regulator. Charge up your battery and check the alternator output under load. You want 13.5 to 13.8 with a load if done in the car. But do a load check on the battery at the same time a bad cell can cause some odd things to happen. Some auto places will test the alternator on a bench for free if you take it in. Hope this helps.

While car is off,check battery voltage with a volt-meter.If above 12 volts,start car,& put positive(red) end of volt-meter to red wire(metal part or nut that holds wire to alternator) that is on alternator.Put other end on negitive on battery.What is the voltage reading doing this while engine is running?
