Does my 89 corvette have
You have built in regulator. Charge up your battery and check the alternator output under load. You want 13.5 to 13.8 with a load if done in the car. But do a load check on the battery at the same time a bad cell can cause some odd things to happen. Some auto places will test the alternator on a bench for free if you take it in. Hope this helps.

While car is off, check battery voltage with a volt-meter.If above 12 volts, start car,& put positive(red) end of volt-meter to red wire(metal part or nut that holds wire to alternator) that is on alternator.Put other end on negitive on battery. What is the voltage reading doing this while engine is running?
