Problems reinstalling lock plate in steering column

The point that I'm at the lever is no longer in I've disassembled the steering column and replaced the ignition lock cylinder. Now attempting to reassemble the column, I know if you get a bolt in there and tighten it all the way against the rod in the center of the telescoping shafts then it prevents it from coming out but my problem is with finding one that fits exactly and don't want to damage any threads.
