Car was at a shop getting headers put on, they said car started up and ran till engine got hot and then died. Car turns over, but no spark and you can smell the gas, so what would cause the engine to die like that?
Coil is year old, opti is 6-8 months old, I have a new ICM and shop is going to put it on and try, but never heard of an ICM dieing like that.
Checked WP, no signs of leaks and check engine light is not on.
Have not had a chance to pull codes.
The Analog coolant sensor plug on the right bank was cracked during the installation.
I'm not badmouthing them, but is it possible they pinched a wire and burned it thru, or grounded it, or any number of other things that mechanics dont like to take credit for? things like 'coolant sensor cracked during install' kind of gets my mind thinking like that. sorry
The ICM could definitely cause this type of problem and it could have just happened.
But I would check the ICM, coil, opti and ECM connectors for proper seating and if and connector got cracked, broken or dislodged.
If I was in your place, I would check the ECM output to the ICM to see if there is the 1.0-4.0 volts A/C drive to it. That would tell you if the opti and ECM are basically working and then the problem would have to be at the ICM or coil area.
You check this by removing the ICM connector and measuring the white wire, in "B" with the meters red lead, and ground the black lead. If I would had to guess I would say there's a good chance the voltage is going to be there because you smell fuel so it sounds like the injectors are working and if that is so, then the opti and ECM are functioning to generate the drive for the injectors.
And please don’t over look the 10 amp #25 fuse for the 12 volts to power the coil and ICM.

In the fuse panel on the right side of the car, passenger side. Open the passenger door all the way and there is a door with a latch that turns. Turn it 1/4 turn to left to open and remove the door. Use the fuse lay out on the door to locate the ignition coil fuse.
As said already and I did miss it, check for a pinched or broken wire. I will also say there's not much ignition wiring down by the headers or exhaust. Most of it is on the top side and a bit lower in a couple places. But still got to look at it all at least for a place to start looking.
ICM fixed the problem, but headers leak like crazy and took 2 weeks.
Can say, that if you are in Birmingham, Al, then DO NOT go to ACME Mufflers for anything, period. Nope, do not EVEN think about them. Fix it with duct tape first, anything but taking the car to them.
I have an 84 and am having the same problem. Car died in my driveway. Replaced cap rotor and coil and it cranked right up, but then died again while idling. I will check the ICM tomorrow...sounds like it might be that

The ICM is only used on the 92-96 cars. You have a different ignition system on your 84 and it has a conventional distributor as the 92-96 does not. Those use the opti-spark system.
I think it uses the HEI system and uses the EST and ECM to drive it.
