Get the dash pad off!

Then you'll see the clips and have better access.

Pop riveted and sheetmetal screws if memory serves correct.

It is NOT designed to be removed easily.

Yeah, from what I remember the lower carpeted bolster has to come out and there are four nuts that are a royal PIA to get out, maybe someone can chime in on access to those nuts, the dash pad and radio are a breeze.

Default Eckler's or Mid-America

If I remember correctly (I did this in '86) when I bought the kit from Eckler's it had instructions on "how to" included. It wasn't easy and took most of the afternoon.

Made mine from 1/4" sheet ABS, less than $10 including paint.

Some info from my 86 FSM

It has been years since I took mine out, but I recall removing the top pad and the carpet section under it.

There was one diagonal metal strap near the middle (I think) that was going to be so hard to get to that I used a cutoff wheel in a Dremel and cut it in half. It went in the trash anyway so why be gentle removing it??

I have made a couple of mods to the dash to make getting it apart easier. It is an absolutely terrible design.

You don't have to take anything apart to remove it. If you want to you can go through the fuse box opening with a hand held saw to get at the brackets. Saw through the bracket or the fastener to release the whole box. The whole thing can be removed to be replaced with a panel that way. Replacing the bread box was one of the first things I did, the flat panel looks much better to me.

Here is a write-up on how to remove the breadbox. Also, I have a custom made American black walnut replacement dash panel if you are interested.
