OK, I asked about this in the past, I've read a lot about lt1s, but haven't really checked out l98s whatsoever and this is becoming an interest to me...
These are questions for anyone who has done the work or has the current mods on their car...given that someone out there does.
All right what exactly do you have to consider when purchasing the parts for this and what do you need besides your basic supercharger kits that people sell? I really know nothing in the area of forced induction other than some odds and ends on my friends turboed talon and eclipse.
And in the long run...let's say w/o having the knowledge to do the work yourself, all though my friends and I could probably colaborate and do it, what'd this end up costing you guys, ballpark figure? I know you're looking at 3-5k for the charger and what not, but beyond that what parts are required?
I might decide to just find a cheap early c4 rather than purchasing one of the later c4s im lookin at now, just trying to weigh out options before I take the final plunge.
Oh, and what results did you see? If I did something of this sort, odds are for a good while, I wouldn't be able to afford the other components I'd later want installed. Thanks!
Generally, the supercharger kits will come with everything you need to add the basic blower to your car. However, there are a ton of upgrade options that are usually available. Check out a few websites for companies that seel superchargers...you should be able to score a wealth of information there. My system is an older set-up, but it cost around $6K with all the options (like the water injection unit and what-not) when it was put on. I highly recommend going with a new kit, though...the older superchargers can be easily overspun, ruining your bearings. My kit is from Carroll Supercharging. You might want to check them out. http://www.carrollsupercharging.com/
They are very expensive. $4500 to start, just for the charger kit. Can your engine handle it to begine w/? They are very loud. (The jet whine.)
The L98 have very few options.
Stay away from ATI.
Spend your $ wisely.
There is no reason to stay away from ATI. They make a fine product and a unmatched race blowers.
That said ATI had major customer service issues in the past that caused those involved to become very vocal about there experience. Now some of the problems are also customer based, any blower bolted on a engine with out proper tuning and support parts is going to be trouble.
Many of the people that stat there is a problem with ATI have nerver owned any blower let alone had a problem with ATI. Kinda the bad part of the internet, someone sees something and takes it as face and continues to post with out any personal experience.
For what it is worth the worst problems I have had was with a blower and company many recomend. This is based on using blowers for over ten years and having bought eight different blowers.
Can you guys post links to all the sites that sell superchargers or the company's site itself?
I'm actually starting to reconsider keeping the t/a and supercharging it, I found out that I have some really awesome credit due to the fact that someone sent me a credit card or two I never knew about and then canceled and our bank has it charted as no late payments etc. :flag God bless bank errors. So I might refinance it and just try and get it fully paid off and get it down to about a mid-low 12s 1/4 mile, and then later on, when my insurance quits killing me, go for the c4. Too many choices!
