Hi guys. What would be a good brand and model for lass than 175.00 each.I am not an all season driver, also not adriver in rain.Located in n.y.Thanks for your help.I have a 96 LT4 coupe.
Discounttiredirect.com has Continental Extreme Contact DW for $588.00 for a set of 275/40/17's. I got them on my '89 and can't be more happy with them. Very quiet, and great in the rain. Be sure to get the DW and not DWS. Shipping is free. I also do autocross on mine, and I've never been quicker.
sumitomo is famous for making some of the worst tires the world has ever seen
That may be, but I used their HTR-Z (275 front / 315 rear) for a few years on my 92 and loved them. They stuck WAY better than the stock goodyears, and were good for 2.0-1.97 60ft times at the strip. I still have a pair on the front, but had to switch to MT drag radials on back after my engine mods a couple years ago.
I've read a few guys trashing sumitomos on this forum and others, but there are those of us who swear by them. In my experience, they've been a very good tire, especially for the price. I've had a lot more expensive tires that didn't perform nearly as well.

i believe you, a new anything will often outperform an aged tire like the goodyears. when you replace them try something like the kumho xs which is available in the 315/275 sizes. it will literally blow your mind how much more grip you have and how much more predictable the car is when you roll on the throttle during corner exit
I'm actually running Toyo proxys TQ's on all four corners , but I'm hesitant to recomend them cause there is no warrentee, they only prorate them, and the drag radials do some major hydroplaneing (fishtail) in the rain
Had a local tire and vette shop owner tell me to look into Firestone Firehawks Wide Oval Indy 500s. He is running them on his C3. Checked them out against the mIchelin Pilont Sport specs. Very close. I may try them when my Goodyears go. Has anybody try these?
For inexpensive and quality "name-brand" BF Goodrich XTA is a great tire for the money.
I paid $125 each less than 1 yr ago, plus mounting & balance.
I sold those wheels with the tires, smooth quiet and they held the road very well, and bought some Yokos for my other set of wheels....loudest tire I have heard on a car!
they sing (howl) like lady ga-ga when on grooved concrete..(loud) but do quiet down on asphalt and smooth concrete. I'd avoid those.
The Goodrich were the best buy. Sumitomos were the next best in my area.
