I am 99 % sure its called the canister purge solenoid. It is not part of the air system, but it is part of the emission system. It has something to do with purging fuel line fumes to the atmosphere i think.
I am not totally sure but from what I remember, its a loose description.
It's on my 91 stock, and it is still there. I didn't know what it was for, but I kept it on. It was being held there by duct tape because the bracket was broken.
Your probably going to throw a code if you remove it. I know they have AIR delete kits and you have to do a re-tune or get a new chip if you do that. I would keep it on. It doesn't really affect anything. Besides, if you take it off you are going to have to worry about capping that new hole in your intake. Don't want to lose vacuum.
Yep - it is the Fuel Vapor Canister Purge Soleniod. It is on my 91 as well. FSM covers it in 6E3-C3-1.
The soleniod opens (ground supplied by the ECM) and ports vacuum to the draw vapors from the cannistercanister when the ALDL is grounded, or, during normal operation...
Engine run more than 1 minute in closed loop. -or-
Coolant temp above 140F. -or-
Vehicle speed above 2 MPH. -or-
Throttle off idle above 3% -or-
Block learn in norman ops range.
Failure does not appear to set a SES/OBD code. You could probably remove it and plug the vacuum line, but your purge cannister would not longer function.
If the soleniod was stuck open and pulling vapors at idle, you might pull a code 45 for rich mixture....
