Default Cluster appears to work but...

So I decided to fix the cluster in my 84 to have as spare in the event I sell the car later. I did all the fixes found on Batee.com. I replaced all 4 bulbs and re-soldered all connections and added the extra ground wire. The cluster originally did not work at all and the turn signal/hi beam light were always on. According to Batee.com this was because of ground issues. So I took it apart and performed all the fixes listed. Now when I first turn the key on everything lights up as per normal. But after that initial light up nothing works. It shows all the outlines and the rpmx100 etc but there are no readings. No bars on the gas gauge, no bars on the tach. No numbers on the mph. I have also checked all fuses and the ground behind the dash and the one behind the driver side head. All are good.

Any ideas?

Edit--

To help be a little more specific these are the fixes I have done exactly.

Problem- 891 bulbs did not light up and the indicator lights stayed illuminated at all times. gauge was pitch black no matter what.
- Changed 891 bulbs, no change
- Re-soldered inter-board connector and soldered in extra ground wire. Indicator lights now work properly, 891 bulbs now light up. Display now lights up and everything lights up for check when key is first turned. After check no readings are shown.
- checked and reran additional grounds. No change
- checked fuses all were good replaced anyways. No change

So that is where I am at.

I edited this picture i found to show what I remember it looking like earlier when car is running

so when you turn the key on with out startin the car , it lights up, and after the car is running it quits lighting up? possibly not getting energy from the run side of ign switch, that doesnt mean your ing sw. is bad, just that its not getting voltage from that side.

I got it set up here in the house now and it does the same thing. I can't get any reading out of the battery voltage gauge right now on the bench. Maybe the lcds are bad or something?

I find it hard to believe all lcds went bad at once. The on board power supply runs the lcds so I would suspect it first.

I believe it. I had to undo many "fixes" from previous owners. Who knows what this thing has been through and how long its been out of order.

The picture shows a bad speedo & tach LCD. Your cluster is beyond the "battee" fixes & needs a power supply.

Where can I buy these parts? I also need the middle Information LCD as I found a crack in the edge. I found the LCD new on ebay but I am unable to find the power supply. Is it possible to repair the power supply?

I guess I am on my own with this? If all I need is a power supply I cannot justify paying 350 bucks for somebody to put one in. Is there really nobody with any information at all about where to get one?

You didn't look close enough on flEaBAY there are (DIY) power supplies listed on there from time to time as well ~ $150+ shipping. Like the LCD panels listed on that site these power supplies appear to be something that someone specifically designed or reverse engineered to replace the stock piece for '84-88 cluster. @ $350 it would be cheaper to pick up a good/used cluster and swap yours out as a whole or do some parts swapping between the clusters until you get a unit that "works". "Good" '84 cluster are getting harder to find.

If you did your home work on "cluster repair" you'd see that there are quite a few individuals who repair clusters as a part time or full time job....so they are not very likely to offer up free repair tips or their supplier lists of where they get their repair/replacement "parts".

Here's a power supply repair tip that I'll offer up.....it is not usually the whole power supply that blows....test/check the capacitors on that pcb - chances are that's were your issue(s) are.

I did do my homework on "cluster repair". Everybody just says go to Batee for the end all be all solution which it is obviously not. For some issues its good and others it leaves a lot of information out.

as for ebay I checked many different terms in relation to the cluster and the power supply and nothing came up

If you go this route it would be "smart" to figure out and/or make sure you actually need a new power supply before you go out and buy one.

As mentioned above, with your busted LCD panel(s) your best bet is to pick up a good used '84 cluster to part swap with. Remember that some of the parts for the '84 cluster are specific to the '84. Not all '85+ cluster components will bolt over to the '84.

Good luck with the project,
