Default Fire in the hole

They say necessity is the mother of invention. If any of you guys have to deal with a blocked EGR port (po401), or a blocked anything, you should try this out. I had a carbon-clogged EGR on a Buick 3.1 V6 that I was working on. I tried coat hangers, etc to no effect. I then took a piece of 1/8" plastic coated wire rope and stripped of about an inch of the plastic and chucked it up in my cordless drill. When the sharp stranded ends hit the blockage. they spread out and sawed a nice clean hole through the carbon, and cleaned out the whole port. No more check engine light, no 180 dollar EGR valve replacement. The plastic makes it easy to feed into the hole. Worked very nicely! I figure this would work on a lot of different things. Please consult your doctor. Wish I had taken a better pic, sorry.

Yes....and notice the paper, teasing the sparks to jump over and light my garage on fire! After I posted the pic, I noticed this and knew I would get "flamed" (pardon the pun). What you cannot see is the open container of gasoline underneath, and my son running around with scissors. In all seriousness, I need to fix that ASAP.

brake cleaner sprayed in the egr ports disolves the carbon real fast.

Yes it does....I forgot to mention using brake cleaner. Great stuff for cleaning just about anything and kills Yellowjackets before they complete their last thought. Do not weld on anything that has been cleaned with brake cleaner or you will meet a similar fate. Electrolysis with some chemical in it creates some kind of nerve gas. Good to know if your a welder (or anyone with a Harbor Freight Mig)

Great idea! I've been chasing an EGR code on a 3.1 Lumina for some time. Your cable tool idea got around the tight bends in the EGR tube and broke up the carbon. I wound up using an uncoated 1/8" cable. Set my drill in reverse to pull it down into the tube and then changed directions several times as it reamed the carbon out. It's been a week so far and no new codes set, so I think it's all good. Thanks for the fix!
