hmmmm...I was going to use the Gen III unit they offer (opti only no distributor) but a bit disheartened after seeing this.

Guys I have had 2 MDS's fail on me in less than 300 miles. Got a refund from them. Stock opti went back on and it just failed me this fall. Car has a Pro Charger so I am sick of tearing it apart! I thought I would get quality with MSD and it was CRAP!

I am going to do the LTCC coil conversion. Bob Baily (LTCC) said to me in E mail and I quote: none of these people make their own optical pickup, it seems there are a few sources. Some of the opti people were advertising that they were using Mitsubishi sensors, at least this was the case a few years ago. Otherwise, I usually recommend a delco unit. I personally had good results with the Chandler Motorsports unit, but that particular car was just a stock engined car.

So with that said, do any of you know what opti still uses the Mitsubishi sensors? I kinda liked the idea of the Dynaspark since it was ONLY the sensor and no distributor. Now I really don't know what to do. I can get one from the dealer but there as much as the Dynaspark. It looks like my original opti that failed (only 35K on the car) the sensor still works. Should tear it open, clean it up and put a new cap on it and use it for the conversion? ugggg...I HATE this optispark. I wish I would have NEVER started this project, but when the car runs I love driving it...

No, I replaced two optis with original ACDelcos when they were available.

One buyer of a Petris opti had a very bad experience, so I don't know
if it was an isolated incident, or not.

So anyone know if were ordering a GM unit from the parts counter is it still using the Mitsubishi sensor? Regardless I am doing the coil conversion so I don't care about the distributor section.... all I care about is the sensor and that the unit stays dry.

I had a similar experience with Petris, my pics are on this website. They must be getting them from the same source.

I saw your thread when searching them. Wow...you sound like you wnt thru what i did with the MSD pile of crap!

What was the end result from that whole ordeal? Are you still running the used one from Craigslist? lol
I don't know what to do. He claims it a "Mitsubishi Grade Optical Sensor" on his site. The way that's worded tells me is it NOT a Mitsubishi sensor, but one that is supposed to be equivalent to one. Anyone else using a Petri?
I would really like to know if the Delphi or the AC Delco uses it. The Delphi is on ebay for $335

Yes I'm still running the used one off Craigslist. It had 40k miles on it and I added a new cap and rotor while it was off.

I posted good pics of 2 of Petris's products, The sensors were not marked Mitsubishi anywhere. Mine both gave a code 16 but the car started. He kept telling me it was impossible until I sent them back then they settled and went away.

Can you buy a Mitsubishi sensor to replace the one in the opti?

You could just pick up a used OEM and replace the bearing. One member was experimenting with this.

I have the OEM and the unit only has 30K on it but it got wet last year and the distributor failed this year. Testing it, it looks like the sensor is still good, but I have no idea what it looks like inside. Have not ripped it apart

I wish I knew if I could. I would try that since I have a brand new MSD case that failed. I would just slap the Mitsubishi sensor in it if I knew where to get it and it would fit....
