I couldn't find a slow leak until one day I came home and opened the hood after shutting the engine off and coolant was very slowly dripping onto the exhaust pipe and evaporating before it reached the ground. The head gasket was leaking. If you need new head gaskets, buy the
Fel Pro teflon coated gaskets, they seal much better and last much longer than non coated head gaskets.
Pressurize the cooling system and see what you can find.
With a big enough leak, you put that dye in and when you turn on the black light it will look like someone poured a bucket of dye under your hood and you can't tell where it's all coming from.
Very typical problem with '88 to early '90 C4s. And chances are your friend's car won't experience the full-blown head gasket problem until after he lets the car sit for a while (like over the winter).
