Have a chance to pick up a 91' with 90k, on it for maybe $4-5 it's a 6spd in reasonable shape. Is it worth doing heads and cam on these cars or just wait for an LT1?? This would just be a project and 1/4 mile car for the most part.
If its a 1/4 mi car throw the TPI out and put a different intake on it, you still got a sbc with a ton of aftermarket support. There is some out there for the LT1 but not as much and its pricier.

OK , I would probably keep it injected any suggestion on an intake???
to be frank, a C4 Vette for 1/4 mile use as the main purpose seems a bit misdirected........if I wanted a 1/4 mile car, I would go with something with a solid axle configuration.....ie. Mustang, Camaro........independent rear cars do not lend themselves to be the best under hard launches from a dead stop, especially if you put sticky tires on them.....they can perform well in 1/4 mile shots, mine does.....but I never have run drag radials on it and I don't drag race it much on the track....these cars are better around the twisties....
but the car itself is not a bad buy if it's a six speed in decent shape.....not at all in my opinion.....
I vote L98 for modifications. Ron is right, a modded LT1 is a world of hurt. The limit of the L98 was the short rev range, but that's easily fixed these days with a better breathing intake and some valvetrain changes.
I've learned the hard (read: expensive) way that extensively modding an LT1 is an excercise in pain. Can't keep it cool, can't keep the ignition running, blah blah blah.
Yea not looking to go that crazy, at this point if I can get it for that price I'll just keep it simple.
You are going to have to get into intake modification. The hood scoop is NOT terribly difficult. Cut a small hole for that little part that sticks up. Drill a few holes and mount the scoop. After it works, remove scoop, send it to shop for painting. JUST THE SCOOP. Reinstall.
