Default A/c not working

If anyone would be so kind to point me to a link for a/c diagnosis. Not cooling, compressor not engaged, Auto temp control head blinking when the car is first started.
1991 vette Thanks for any and all assistance.

Buy a GM service manual for your year vette (always include the year when you ask for help too!), it has a procedure for determining what is wrong and what to do about it.

Here is a link to get you started. It may be of some help.

https://www.corvetteforum.com/techti...=193&TopicID=2

My first guess is that you are probably low on freon.

Could be Low..Take your low pressure connector off of the Low pressure switch I believe yours is located on the Accumalator or could be in the Low Side Line. Jump accross the terminals of the connector with a wire if it comes on chances it's low freon.Might get a UV dye test kit and possibly the leak will show up. Mine was the Shrader Valves leaking.

You'll definitely hear a lot of different opinions about converting to 134a so I might as well throw my 2 cents in. In 2001 I had my system recharged with FR12 which worked great until I needed another charge this year. The shop I went to this time didn't have FR12 but they did have Freeze 12 which I had them use. It's been a month now and everything is working great! The shop will need to evacuate the old R12 out before putting the new stuff in. The shop I used also still had some R12 available, but it's pricey. Since I already had an R12 replacement I decided to give the Freeze 12 a shot. I'm happy so far. I found this site with some interesting info regarding R12 alternatives.

Good Luck and stay cool!

Ron

Duracool or redtek.
Walmart sells a kit to recharge. Ive been doing it to cars for 10 years now. No conversion.
Seriously, the stuff is GOD!
In Canada the kit is approx. $50. US is sure to be cheaper.

Freeze 12 is 80% R134 and I don't know of any (legitimate) shops that will put it in or even work on it if you do.

Duracool and all of the other hydrocarbon based refrigerants (which always seem to come from Canada) are specifically outlawed in 18 States; potentially explosive so if you have an evaporator leak, don't let anyone lightup (and buying it will probably put you on the Dept of Homeland Security watch list); and the same shops that won't touch Freeze 12 aren't going to monkey with this junk either.

Most 20 plus year old cars need a complete rebuild which will run you $800 to $2000. If you're worried about the cost of gas, you're worrying about the wrong thing. R12, even at $30/lb, will cost you less than $100. If you can't afford that, maybe you should consider a used Yugo.

If it was "dangerous" Walmart would be the first to stop selling it,you would think.
Never had an issue with it, nor heard of a issue with it. I never even heard of the "outlawed" in some states? I will look into that. Thx for the info.
Each to their own i guess.

Go here and page down to the unacceptable list: http://www.epa.gov/ozone/snap/refrig.../macssubs.html

This crap isn't sold at Walmart in the US - nor have I seen Freeze 12 in a US Walmart, but they do have tons of R134 which is 100% R134, instead of the 80% in Freeze 12 (and gee, you'd think Walmart might cheapen it up a bit).

find some old timers and ask them in they have any. I found a 5 gallon bucket of 12 oz R12 cans at my buddies house. I asked his dad if I could have one for my 92 vette. He said have the whole bucket. then he went and grabbed a set of guages for it and gave me that. He said he has no use for it anymore. I thought I hit gold. luckly my system still has a full factory charge. But my day will come when the compressor goes or a oring leaks. Moral of the story is ask around. it may not be as rare as you think.

donot now about computers on these cars as i am new but i have a few things you can check if you have a multi meter. there should be a plug at the compressor. if all controls are calling you should have apx.12 volts. if not there is a low pressure switch that is normall closed except if you are real low on refrigerant. usually opens to break circuit to compressor at apx 20 pSIG. you would need gauges to verify pressurs. usually closes apx. 40 PSIG. you should check fuses and possibly any fusable links if applicaple.just a few things i know. hope this was helpful.

The blinking means there's a problem and a trouble code should be stored in the CCM. It doesn't work when there's a Code. I'd guess there's no gas. Go here: https://www.corvetteforum.com/techti...=193&TopicID=2
