Question does the 1987 vette have alum valve covers or steel valve covers?

Look just like the covers with the screw in cap.

Updated alluminum heads. In 88 they got self aligning rockers, D port exhaust and a bit better intake ports.

Soooo... I am going to just assume the screw type will not fit on and '87 - in most cases. Why? Well it seems to me that many of the '87 valve covers have 1/4 turn bi-flange types. At least mine is. I am not exactly sure why this is the case however I am interested in a definitive explanation. I will not however be purchasing these really trick looking oil caps I saw the other day however...
