Default max speed

Hi. My car is 92 383 Vette with dana 44. Man, who sold me dana , told that it is 3.55. Max speed of my car now is 120 m/h on 5500 rpm. I checked the rear end calculators ,but if i use 0.70 fourth gear ratio it shows larger speed. Can somebody tell me max speed of your cars with 4L60 & 3.55 rear end?

I think your tranny is not shifting into 4th. Your mph is way off. I trap at 127 in 3rd gear at 6500 with a 4.35 rear. Yours should hit that speed in 3rd @ 5200 with your rear setup.

You know if youre WOT in 3rd it may not go into 4th.

Either its truly not going into 4th or something is wrong.

What rpm is it in OD at say 60 mph?

I think the original 700R4 transmission to your 1992 Vette is long gone......

Its been replaced or during rebuild key specific valvebody parts unique to the C4 only 700 R4's....were stolen.

C4 700R4 valve bodies are highly prized by hotroders outside of the C4 world.

They are like Gold & Glimmering Diamonds to professional transmission guys " In the Know".

Only the C4 700R4 & a few early Z28 TPI cars did they have the upshift from 3rd to 4th overdrive gear range feature at WOT/ Wide open throttle.

It was done with a special TV / throttle valve sleeve, special valvebody separator plate & upshift throttle valve & springs.

Sonnex & B&M have tried to recreate the same 3-4 WOT upshift feature but have never perfected their parts like the original GM C4 engineers did.

Only the original C4 GM 700R4 valvebody works 100 % perfect at 3-4 WOT upshift & holds there till you let off the gas pedal.

Your transmission wont upshift to 4th at WOT no matter how hard you push down on the gas pedal.

You are stuck in 3rd gear because the correct WOT 3-4 upshift parts are long gone.

My 87 Vert 700R4 upshifts from 3-4th WOT @ 114mph every time.
And stays in 4th till I hit top end of 150MPH.

I rebuilt the 700R4 myself so no one else could steal the special valvebody & components.

Had the heads up from my friend Jeff H. that is long time automatic transmission builder.

He told me what happens to other guys with C4 transmissions that bring them into other shops for rebuild.

He said you can kiss your special C4 Valvebody goodbye forever.

Brian

I thought about torque converter too. Pete Kane send me all parts I need ,he send me the non lock up 2800 converter. I rebuild tranny by myself. 3 years I use the car. Everything is o'kay , but only max speed....Yesterday I put the car on the jack & made acceleration. The same thing on the jack too. On the second gear with 5500 I have about 61 mph , on the 3 - about 90 & on the 4 -th - about 115 - 120. May be non lock up converter give such slippage ?

I don't know what Pete K. uses for torque converters or if he has a close friend custom build them for him.

His converters are nice like a Precision Converter Vigilante I hear for a much lower buying price.

If you are lucky,
There may be a problem with the 4th gear overdrive servo piston for the 2-4 band.

I think you are missing the special C4 valvebody or entire original 700R4 trans your Corvette left the factory with.

Just now tested on the road. 5500 rpm . 1st 36 m/h ,2nd 67m/h , 3d 97 m/h. 4 Couldn't test because of road problems. When I drive 60 m/h - I have 2400 rpm on the fourth gear.

I'm not sure I would want to run 120mph on jackstands. Tire balance issues could shake the car off the stands. Also, the angle of the halfshafts can stress the u-joints unless the halfshafts are parallel to the ground. Best to do that stuff on the road. It sounds like you have a real slippery converter.
