I have a 1988 C-4 with a 4x3 OD. tranny. The OD works fine, shifts in and out automatically. However the button on the gear shift does nothing. I have taken off the gear shift **** and pulled out the spring and the two rods. one metal the other plastic. Nothing seems to be broken. What do I do next? Help. This is my first 'vette.
There is a small pushbutton switch at the bottom of the gear shift that is actuated by the rod on the OD button. You may have a defective switch or a broken wire going to the switch, both will not allow you to manually keep the OD locked out or to engage OD by pushing the OD button.
Are you trying the OD switch when engine is cold, or both cold and hot(switch is useless until a certain coolant temp is obtained)?
Maybe the T rod that goes to switch needs some adjustment. Turn the T rod counter clockwise and it will raise the height of switch and may solve your problem.
Switch is removed after removing console and shifter boot.
Here is some info on the switch from my 86 FSM
Thanks for every ones suggestions and the neat schematics from Agent 86. Think I'll try the Radio Shack idea first and if that doesn't work I'll go the $70.00 route. At least now I know where the problem is and how to fix it. Thanks all.
After removing dash and console trim and taking apart gear shift down to the switch, I noticed the switch was loose and had become dislodged from the mount there bye causing the plastic slider to miss the pin. After tightening down the lock nut and putting everything back together it works just fine. I.m glad I took it apart before I ordered a $70.00 replacement. Thanks to everyone for their sound advice and instructions . I'll be keeping the info for further use. One thing I learned so far about Corvettes are they like
a lot of attention.

ALL automobiles over 23 years old require attention. Its a tribute to the quality of the machine that you are still driving it without too much ado after 20+ years. Enjoy what you have; these Corvettes are great sports cars.
