I'm fairly sure my ignition module is acting up again-(only when hot-WOT and heavy load it'll sputter at higher rpm.) So I'm looking at the msd part # msd-8400. Has anyone used this system? Any problems with it? It's the 6A ignition with remote coil and it looks??? like it eliminates the ignition module? Or has anyone had any problems with just the 6A ignition? Thanks for any help!
Re: MSD ignition-worth it? Any problems? (drive it)
The MSD boxes still use the module in the distributer. They have one that increases dwell time. The remote coil eliminates the in cap HEI coil only.
I agree that they make the best components. There are other possibilities such as Crane, Jacobs and Accell. My money would go with MSD.
Make sure during the installation that all wires have been joined properly (IE: soildered in addition to good contact) andthat you have it hooked up to a very good ground. I will run the ground to the frame, and then run a neg from the battery to the frame where my ground is located. I have experienced high RPM problems with msd as a result of half ask wireing. So do it right the first time. :yesnod:
I think, for the price, this is the setup you should get:
Holley Annihilator Module (7-pin I believe; $40)
Hypertech Power Coil kit (Rotor, Cap and Coil all for $80)
MSD 8.5mm SuperConductor Wires ($55)
AC Delco Rapidfire Plugs, and cut the electrode's($30)
I know it may be a LITTLE more than the MSD 6A box...but trust me..you'll notice a difference!
Re: MSD ignition-worth it? Any problems? (drive it)
Drive It,
I've been running the 6AL Ignition Box for about 4 years now.
Prior to it's install, I was experiencing some WOT missing too.
I replaced all the parts I could in the stock Vette distributor with MSD parts, and while the distributor was 'out'...I had it shimmed to take the play out of it.
(Shimmed dist. end play to .025").
Hooked-up the 6AL box at that time, and I've experienced no missing or hesitation, whatsoever...the last 4 years. Awesome unit.
I purchased my MSD 6 AL unit from TPIS.
Part No.: 100-360 ($199.00).
I also purchased the 'Special Adapter Harness', (Coil In Cap Distributor).
Part No.: 100-361 ($20.00).
I highly recommend this unit. Lots of my friends run this set-up, and none of us have any bad experiences to report.
Some of us want to try the MSD Digital set-up, but why fix what isn't broke. Nearly all of us are staying right where we're at.
