Default Help: '88 no power under load

Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

No power under load from small throttle through to WOT. Stumbling, no "power".

My 1988 has been modified with the American Racing Header's (no smog, no egr) I've just put in a brand new adjustable fuel pressuer regulator and it's spot on 48 lbs. Timing set at 6 degrees btdc. Brand new TPS. Idles and Rev's just fine sitting still, only under load does it stumble and falter. All new ignition and cooling too.

Any idea's are appreciated. I don't really want to throw more money at it guessing.

modifying the "smog" equipment and eliminating egr are wrong headed. I've read many threads where engines were not "right" after monkeying with it.

possibility that exhaust system is restrictive. retarded timing causes a soft throttle. would you bet that it is actually 6*? if not set properly, it can be retarded but appear to be advanced.

but...sounds like insufficient fuel. no missing, just not performing.

someone will have the same experience and can help more than I.

I also have an 88 that had the same problem. Turned out my pre cats came apart and clogged the main cat. Since you have headers you probably don't have pre cats, but what about the main cat?

Brand new cats came in the X-pipe from American Racing Headers. High flow. Maybe 20 miles on them. Thanks for your comments though. Hopefully I get it narrowed down.

You said all new ignition, but my feeling is that you need to check the resistance of your plug wires.

I had a bad wire when I had this symptom.

Did you check for codes?

I assume that's at idle, but what does the pressure do under load ? Will your gauge reach the windshield so you can monitor it under real load ?

I did the tape the tape the guage to the windshield. Under load it seemed inconclusive to me. It was up and down?? I was hoping it would seriously go one way or the other. With the vacuum line plugged in, it is exactly 10 lbs lower.

Thank so much for everyone who chimed in.

Agent 86, nice, you were getting close.

I FIGURED IT OUT! Yeah.

Here's what it was.

I bought one of those new "fancy" ""corrected"" distributor caps from accell for the clean look and tidy wiring. It didn't like it. Today, I put back the old one for testing, after a new TPS and fuel pump still no dice. Changed out the distributor cap to the old one,...runs like a champ!!

I was glad it wasn't the chip. No codes. PCM for less had everything I did to it and it was fine, runs real strong now with an American Racing Header no smog with Cats in the xpipe. into 2.5 stock type no drones for a turbo sound. It does not sound like a mustang gt thats for sure.

Thanks again guys. I really appreciate your taking the time to help me with your suggestions. I was just under the knife, and start chemo this coming Monday, so I wanted to finally sort it before feeling like crap . (Having goofed with it all spring (Header install on a 4+3 WITH KC4 was a challenge, but I was up for it).

Have a wonderful Day!!!
