I think think that I may have narrowed it down to my overdrive unit. Once again when I get up over 70 MPH, my car skips the OD light is on and some time when it does this the upshift light flashes on and off. It feels like the car wants to down shift. If I press the throttle and disengage the OD it runs fine until the OD kicks back in. I had the trans serviced last week, I even unpluged the wire on the transmission that makes the OD engage, the car did not go into OD nor did it skip, but when I plugged it back up it started to do it again. The toggle on my gear shift will not work either, maybe it's all tied in together. Help meeeeeeeeeee :mad
1)It could be just a simple short at the OD switch.
2)When I bought my '88, it was having problems
of the "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" light coming on.
They replaced a couple things, but no cure.
The car eventually started running hot. REAL HOT.
Unless I was on the highway, it would overheat.
When I pulled away from a stop (in OD), it would
drop out of OD unless I was very careful and accellerated
very easily.
The problem; my ECM was bad.
The ECM controls timing and it was WAAAAYYYYY advanced.
That explaned the overheating.
The OD unit also is signalled, in part, by spark timing.
That's why it kept dropping out of OD when I didn't expect it to.
Good luck, I hope this helps.
Have you checked the OD relay in the engine compartment by the brake booster? The stock wiring is too short and the insulation pulls back over the years. This causes the wires to be able to touch each other and short out the circuit. This can cause the OD to shift in and out really fast. How do I know this? It happened to mine. :(
So... I pulled the relay and rewrapped all the wires, now it works great.
