Default ALDL connectvity problem

I recently tried to scan the codes on my 1990 Coupe with an OBD1 scan tool. The error message was that the scanner was not connected to the car. I plugged it in, turned key on but not started the car and initiated the sequence. The scanner would attempt to connect, but could not. I checked the fuses on the main fuse panel, all seemed OK. Previously I have pulled codes for the ABS and the SIR using the paper clip method, and the ALDL seemed to work properly for those pins. Can anyone provide any insight?

You might want to use a mirror and a flashlight to verify that you did not accidentally bend one of the connectors so that isn't making contact with the code reader plug.

I did that with my 92 using the paper clip method and had to straighten one out for an actual code reader plug to work.

You might want to try again with the engine running before you connect and see if it works.
