Ok, I believe all of your suggestions may have gotten my issue squared away. I drained the system reinstalled the thermostat flushed the system with water then filled the cooling system. I let it idle for about a half hour and it didn't run hot where as before, it would run hot within about 15 to 20 minutes. I got a couple of more questions though. How much coolant is standard for the stock system L98 engine. Also what should my oil pressure be at idle?
What are normal operating oil temp and pressure at idle? My oil pressure is running about 17lbs at idle and the oil temp gets up to at high as 223. The engine is no longer overheating. Are these pressures and temperature normal?

do you recall what they were before? 17 is on low side but not by much, maybe due to oil temp IF temp is accurate. seems way too high to my 91. 91 usually does not register on the stock gage when engine is 200.
you say the oil is higher than engine? not sure my gage is accurate, either.
I don't remember what they were before. Also I am not saying that the oil temp is higher than the engine temp, I'm just asking what are normal temperatures and pressures.

got it!
normal is different for all engines and conditions. fsm somewhere says 6 lbs min pressure at hot idle.
my 90 varies 15 to 30. oil temp never gets beyond about 130-150. stock gages, these are not linear, of course.

Excellent suggestions, this should be significanly better than buying one of those prestone kits with the bottle of "water leak maker" Err I meant to say coolant flush....
