What most on here refer to as the CTS ; coolant temp sensor ( 2 wire unit for the computer )
is at front of intake under the TB.
On a 85 ,as you correctly state, the drv side sensor ( 1 wire ) is for the coolant temp gauge ,
the pass side unit is the temp over ride switch for the fan.

85 only had ECM control of radiator fan but with a mech override switch.

Hi
I also have an 85 vette, the ecm controls the main fan at 100deg c also when the a/c is running .
the the sensor on the dipstick side of the engine is for the booster fan,
it will ground to turn on the booster fan (in front of a/c condenser) at 115 deg c. check if you have the small booster fan, look in front under bumper.
