Default C beam difference

Does the L98 auto tranny come with a different C beam than the 4+3 or ZF?

Yes. The auto and manual C-beams are different length.

I thought that was odd, so I'm checking the parts book...

There's 3 different C-beams from '84 to '91...

Support, Driveline (1984)(1985 A.T.)(1986-91 exc G87) 14091265
Support, Driveline (1985 M.T.) 14084007
Support, Driveline (1986-91 G87) 14091264

G87 is the 8.5" ring gear (Dana 44?) and G89 is 7.5" ring gear (Dana 36?)...So that would seem to be correct...

1985 M.T. seems to be unique...

If you believe the parts book, the 4+3 and ZF use the same c-beam. I've read posts here from auto-to-ZF users who simply re-drilled the holes in the c-beam for the new trans/diff hole location, so I'm guessing the auto c-beam is the longer one. So if you're looking at picking one up, the auto c-beam could be used in either configuration (with maybe some new holes).

Anyone else? :chevy

Yes...

The auto tranny c beam is about an inch longer... with the auto driveshaft about 1/2 inch longer. I've done the conversion from Dana36 to Dana44 and used manual tranny c-beam and driveshaft when I converted...
