85 MAF problems
When I put the new one in the cars idle dropped down to 300 rpm or so, drove smoothly and normally under light throttle. But under heavy throttle it climbs up to 2000-3000 rpm or so and feels like it hits a cap and can't climb any higher. It kinda softly backfires out of the intake and just quits accelerating. It also runs super rich the entire thing. The car stinks of raw fuel and my gas gauge that would typically read mid teens at a certain speed shows 4 to 6 at the same speed.
I also noticed with my stock MAF, the car runs like crap and backfires heavily out of the intake while cold, and drives almost normally once it's warmed up, runs like that whether my stock MAF is plugged in or not. So it seemed like my stock MAF isn't connecting, but then a new MAF runs really bad.
Does anyone know if that sounds like some sort of fail-safe or weird mode that the MAF may be causing, or if some sensor has something to do with it?
And you said it may take a bit for the ECM to re-learn the routine, do you know if that is something that will be done in a few hours or a long time? I drove it around town the day I tried that maf and left it on over night and tried driving it around the next day but nothing got better.
Yeah I'm wondering if something is causing the car to go into a limb mode, that what it almost seems like to me. But I for sure wouldn't know

When your batt goes wrong, and you go with a new battery, then the ECM have to re-learn,but it requires not more than 1 hour driving the car around town to complete self-lerning cicles.
If you had driven the car for so long time with no better results, than, new MAF haven't solved the problem.Code 33 -34 are tipically MAF sensor output voltage related problems. There's an invalid relation betwen MAF output and TPS output. ECM sees an High voltage (more than 90 grams /second) coming from MAF with a TPS sensor at throttle indicating less than half throttle load and less than 2200 rpms.In this condition ECM sets itself to a default value untill ignition is cycled, and a code 33 is set & ceck engine light come on steady.
i think about 2 test to do:
1) May be, as i told, a faulty MAF module (so it's called in 85' tunedport, then in 86 it becomes burn-off relais and MAF power relais, but a different ECM in 86'(165) and different wiring) btw it's very difficult to find one and must be serviced if faulty, you don't find anyone at Ecklers or so...Code 33 trouble chart in 85' FSM requires a lot of cecks with a light bulb to verify grounds that are MAF circuit related,i'll send you a scan but isn't good, find a 85' FSM if you haven't.
2) If your TPS isn't good it comes on with a code 22,but try to ceck as usually .054 volts at TPS with the car in D at 500 rpm, just to be sure your TPS is good ...
