OK, found a local shop to put 3.73 gears in my 95 lt-1.I will supply parts. So what do i need to order and from where? Also What should i have replaced as long as they got it down that far?Sorry about my limited knowledge, any info would be apreciated.
if your local shop installing the gears don't know, you might think about finding someone that does.not slamming just saying. setting up gears with proper pattern and lash is not that difficult,if you have a dial indicater. bearings, seals, and rebuild of the posi .depending on the mi. and previous abuse. if grandma drove it for 50,000 its prob. ok if i drove it for 10,000 you might want to tear it down and check it out
I agree that the shop should be able to get the gears, bearings, and seals for you. Most of the big Corvette only places online sell the parts though. If you have an auto get the D36 parts, if a 6-speed get the D44 parts. I haven't had much luck with Richmond 3:73 gears but that was in an 86 Firebird. They had a whine above 50 mph and the guy took it apart and redid it several times. The Viper 4:10's I have are quiet. If you do a search for gear swap or 4:10 gears you will get some good info. I redid the posi but it had 110k on it when I pulled it.
Thanks mtnmanut, the car has 57000 on it.Who knows how its been driven, you might have owned it lol.I was thinking if i got all the parts myself i could save some money, and just pay labor. Theres no way i will attempt it. My question is there a kit that has everything i need? I might as well have totally gone through. Thanks
Hi I researched this a little as I also have a rearend I want to rebuild. I'm told you want a oem type gear set that a lot of the aftermarket gearsets can have a lot more gear noise. I would get it rebuilt by someone close by, friends have gotten rearends rebuilt and they always had trouble. Mostly with Howling or gear noise. If you do it close you can bring it back and make them fix it right. It's taken some of my friends two or three times bringing it back to get it right. I would set it up with a drain hole to change the rearend lube while you are at it. There are kits that give you drain plug and show you where to put it or you could do it the cheap way and just drill the bottom flange then tap and use a allen screw w/silicone to seal the threads. Good luck
