Just about what I was going to say.
PS.- Scorp, did you get a new timing marker(timing tape), aswell as paint a line on the balancer? I can't see ANY marks on my timing tape, so I think I'm going to replace it and paint the mark better on the balancer. I'm gonna play with my timing too. (Gotta get it right before I get a kit{NOS})
I bought a new OEM balancer that already has the one timing line on it. When I redid my timing cover I polished the timing tab so that I could see the #s and lines on it easily.
OHH! Of course you'd take the EASY way out! :D I think I'm just going to paint the line with some indiglo paint, and then get a new timing tab. I say it's cheap insurance.
Its going to vary from setup to setup. You could advance the timing as Scorp indicated and it may help you the same or it could reduce everything by the same factor he increased.
Rule of thumb is run as little timing that provides maximum performance. Takes a long time for some to understand that statement.
Learn the dynamics of the engine and it will become more and more clear. Also the distributer is not the place to make permanant timing changes, for it only makes global changes. Get into the chip and you can taylor the curve.
