Default The Supertrapp Project

Update; video in post #22.
Not to be confused with the Alan Parsons Project (only Austin Powers fans will get that joke !) After seeing the youtube video on the 87/88 Callaway twin turbo with its 4 Supertrapp mufflers I was impressed with the looks and sound of the setup,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?index=2...C800CB78858FF7 ,
Then I found a 4 x Supertrapp setup off a c4 on fleabay, so I started wondering, could these things propell my 85 to 254 mph ? probably not without the twin turbo callaway engine but it would look and sound cool
anyway after some spirited bidding I won the setup for the princely sum of $22
I had to have them freighted half way across oz so that was a bit more than the cost price but here they are

So now I have another project on my hands, do any of the other members have experience with the supertrapps and does anyone have photo's of the setup on their C4 ?

Wow I haven't seen 'Trapps since the '80's. Ya, I had one on the back of my '84 turbo (Callaway believe it or not) VW GTi

That was years ago, so my experience is pretty dated I went with the Trapp because it was the only muffler that would fit on the 3" pipe and still clear the spare tire well without rubbing. My friend says it was so the inspection station couldn't put the exhaust probe in there

Post up some pictures after the install.

Hi Dan, like your avatar - that is a photo from the Targa Tasmania ?
I have started taking them apart and cleaning up everything,
cleaning up the pipes with some wet and dry below,

each pipe has 9 baffle plates in them, buffing the carbon off the plates and cleaning up the end plates,

Bought some new stainless fasteners and half way thru the clean up.

Good call, yes it is.

Funny, in the U.S. Army we had a little 1.5KW generator, powered by a Yanmar diesel with a Super Trapp spark arrester (no muffler just the baffle plates). Being on a diesel every now and then they would soot up and the engine would run like crap! First time I thought something was seriously (mechanically) wrong. Then I, finally, checked the exhaust

Never had an issue with the Trapp on the VW.

supertrapp were the pipes to have on the old school 4 stroke 3 wheelers...

great sound, could change the amount of discs, and helped power.

A lot of those bolts securing the discs would snap off, so I hope this did not happen to you.

Some parts can still be had through supertrapp, but I do not know if all the discs are universal.

Hi Deepa,
after pulling everthing apart you can see that an exhaust system is not a good place to be if your a fastener ! Most of the stuff in these mufflers is stainless, but for some reason they thought it was a good idea to use round nuts on the long hex bolts that run thru the discs, i had to buy a pair of pointy nose grip pliers to get in there and keep hold of them to get the bolts undone
anyway I have bought all new stainless fasteners and am most of the way thru the clean up and rebuild, nearly time to book a trip to the exhaust place.

I have twin supertrapps 17 baffles each.. limited design for a f body. 2-1/4 in and out. I tested on my C4 in place of the resonator.
Yours should look pretty mean.. need pics once in place... With quads I would say 9 - 10 baffles each

I have my supertrapps on.. for a sound test.. pic's would be embarrassing
It's a tight fit in the middle with two 5" rounds or re-work the muffler eliminator section to accommodate 20" of straight... pic of limited supertrapps
I will record ASAP very impressive

Sorry for my ignorance, what is the benefit of these? I've always thought you want the exhaust to flow as easily as possible, where as these seem to add an obstruction at the end of the system. I know callaway used them so Im not doubting them or saying they are no good, I just dont understand what you are trying to accomplish with them.

The answer to your question.. unlike a muffler.. you can tune the sound on supertrapps. the more baffles you install.. let's more air flow through... 1 baffel is very restrictive
So the more you see at the end on this design... You will hear exhaust loud and clear

Those look great!
I remember when Supertrapps were the exhaust to have on sport bikes back in the '80s and '90s.

Hitmanpty - they are the silver letters, its just the camera flash that makes them look white,
thanks for the positive comments, and the answer is;
these things sound fantastic ! i was more than pleasantly surprised, I really didnt know what to expect, I listened to the callaway car in the video and hoped it would be similiar,
after I modified the engine I had the dreaded resonance in the cabin, the supertrapps got rid of it , it now has a much more noticeable v8 rumble to it, and a smoothness to it, when you look at the pipes and see how it looks "closed off" you cant imagine it would sound right, but it does. I dont know if its my imagination but it seems to run better too.
Will have to consult with the 16 yo son and see if i can post a video to give an idea of the sound.
